The term “sociopath” refers to an individual who suffers from antisocial personality disorder, yet the degree to which such a person is antisocial is usually quite extreme. In fact, according to Charles Zastrow, author of Social Problems: Issues and Solutions, unlike someone who is simply a recluse and prefers being alone, a sociopath lacks moral constraints to prevent him or her from doing “whatever is personally advantageous,” regardless of who might be hurt or how much suffering those actions might cause.
In other words, a sociopath feels no sense of loyalty to other people, including parents or immediate community. Interestingly, however, such individuals do not seem to have any particular defect when it comes to communicating with others or in their ability to reason logically, but they do lack the ability to conduct themselves with decency, responsibility, and respect for the rights of other people and, in many cases, animals.
