In general, Dynamic mics are used for amplifying instruments such as: drums, guitar and amps. They are cheaper, moisture resistant, more rugged and used for outside, live-stage vocal performances. The downsides are that Dynamic mics have a narrow frequency response and are not well suited for soft vocal and acoustic instruments. They tend not to be used as computer mics or USB recording mics because they pick up interference. The most common is the Shure Dynamic SM 58. microphone.

The Condenser microphone has a wider frequency response and is used for acoustic guitars, vocals or any acoustic instrument that demand accuracy. They are considered to be the highest quality mic more suitable for recording, in turn making them more expensive. These mics are more sensitive and are fragile, unlike the rugged Dynamic mic. They are important in the Recording Studio.

Whats The Difference Between a Dynamic Microphone and The Condenser Microphone?

The Condenser microphone also uses “phantom” power to operate, usually 12 to 48 volts. Most pre-amps and mixers provide this electric source of power. Condenser microphones capture more detail and are a better recording microphone. The most notable condenser mics are the: Neumann microphone, AKG microphone and Rodes microphone. Others are Audio-Technica microphones and Samson C02 (Pencil) Condencer microphone & C03 (USB) Condencer microphones.
