With the impending cinematic release of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Cee-Lo Green re-launches his solo career on the movie’s soundtrack with the upbeat, indie love song, “What Part of Forever.” Having mainstream success as a part of the group Gnarls Barkley, Cee-Lo finds himself launched into the potential madness of opportunity that comes along with entering the realm of Twilight fanaticism.

Who Is Cee-Lo Green?

Cee-Lo’s impact as a singer, rapper, songwriter, and producer began with a deep appreciation for gospel and soul music defined by the American South. Born Thomas DeCarlo Callaway in 1974, Cee-Lo’s ability to croon led to him making a name for himself as a part of the group Goodie Mob. Jason Birchmeier and Steve Leggett of All Music Guide say that Goodie Mob laid the blueprint for southern, Dirty-South style rap, popular in the 1990s. Cee-Lo’s influence in the group led to national recognition for Goodie Mob in 1995.

After Cee-Lo broke from Goodie Mob and signed to Arista Records, he released a solo album in 2002 titled Cee-Lo Green and His Perfect Imperfections. While Birchmeier and Leggett note that the album did not achieve commercial success, the critics recognized its diversity. Cee-Lo’s 2004 follow-up, Cee-Lo Green is the Soul Machine, included the radio-friendly singles, “I’ll Be Around” and “The One.” The album’s production style, considered unmatched when released, also led to critical acclaim for Cee-Lo, but failed to launch him into the mainstream.
