Studio One Tattooing

For hundreds of years, tattooing has had many different purposes and meanings. For some, it’s a sign of a criminal (the Yakuza in Japan for example are expected to get massive tattoos that can cover most of their bodies in order to be accepted into their clans). For others, it’s a symbol of their heritage or tribes. Now days, in our modern culture where tattoos have become more acceptable, they are widely seen as fashion statements or marks of individuality. But as the meanings of tattoos change, there are still things you need to look out for when going under the needle.

Step One – The Clean Factor

When looking for an appropriate studio, always check their hygiene standards. Equipment must always be both one use only and disposable, or be freshly autoclaved to ensure it is sterile. However, needles should never be used twice, even after being autoclaved.

Don’t be afraid to ask the artist about sterilization and to see the equipment being opened. If the tubes, tips and grips are not sterile, or the needle has been used before, there is a risk you could become infected if the person the needle was used on before had a blood born disease such as HIV or hepatitis. The chance of this happening is quite low, but it’s a risk nonetheless.
