Studiologic Tmk88 Review
It's an interesting idea, but... Really, you could build a recording setup ten times better than this with even the money from the starting bid, easily. Sure, its in a piano, but, the equipment itself is kinda lackluster. The keyboard is pretty nice as a midi controller, but the mic is pretty 'meh' for a $4000 setup, and using klipsch computer speakers in place of real studio moniters? Also, pretty lackluster, and seems like corners are being cut. And to be honest, I really can't help but think the recording interface was chosen because it was white and matched everything else rather than because its actually a recording interface worthy of a setup like that. And as far as the mac mini, its in interesting idea, but once again, pretty lackluster, and the lack of power and possibly ram is concerning. Yes, you can *record* off quite a few inputs and even a few tracks at a time with a system that doesnt sport the most powerful processor in the world, but you also have to remember that because the actual piano has been removed from this and the keys replaced with a midi keyboard, that the mac mini will have to synth out anything played on it, which is either going to take an enourmous amount of ram (think Native Instruments Akoustik Piano) or a huge amount of processing power (Photone, Vapor, even sample-based stuff), if not both, and thats assuming you dont want to introduce any effects into the mix, which pretty much dooms a cpu that weak. Frankly it seems to rely on novelty for the value, and recordingwise it comes up far short.
I think when you have accepted moving a B3 around everywhere everything else is a 'piece of cake'. We zipped that gear to the truck like nothing and though I played with this trio almost 4 years (average 4 or 5 nights/wk) do not recall one conversation to make things lighter. Unwired it, put it down on the dancefloor and then piece by piece hustled out with obviously the B on ROKs. Maybe we were just crazy with all the heavy stuff. I will say that we usually stayed at least a week at a gig unlike today that is night by night. That could be a big factor. Usually the guitarist and myself moved it. You know drummers. That was the bitch never the weight "where the ****!! is <name> to help" (drummer) A little coaxing from the bar usually did it.
About my previous comments on the Numa Nero: I love the feel of the keyboard to me being so 'Grand-like'. Really tickled with this. I am practicing the piano a lot more with longer sessions as the feel of the controller just makes practicing easier and more interesting to those of us that use digitals. Putting some new classical piano together for my own pleasure also. The Garritan Steinway (updated last month) makes it a hoot, imho.
This is all subjective but absolutely the best weighted keyboard (wood) I have played and have spent tons of hours with cohorts in GC playing just about everything. Even the sharps and flats feel so right. I will say though being an organist, I have piano developed hands over the years so those who would like a lighter action (organ like-or semi weighted) may not like it.
