Most reptile species and individuals tend to be concentrated in the tropics and subtropics but their numbers decline rapidly towards the poles and in high altitudes. This is reflected by the fact that there are only 340 or so species of reptiles in the United States and Canada.

The Ecology and Diversity of Reptiles

The lizards and snakes are by far the most numerous and widely distributed of living reptiles. Both occur in a great variety of habitats and climatic conditions ranging from deserts to tropical rain forests. There are no fully aquatic lizards but several groups of snakes, such as sea snakes, are highly aquatic.

Turtles and tortoises are most abundant and diversified in the tropics and extend into both the northern and southern temperate zones. Turtles are amphibious, with both fresh- and saltwater species, while the tortoises are strictly terrestrial.
