Walton Arts Center Case Study
For senior citizens, all falls are serious. As they get older, the bones lose bone mass, resulting in osteoporosis. Joints become arthritic, leading to a loss of flexibility. Slower reflexes slow response time to a loss of balance. All these factors contribute to an increased risk of falls among the elderly. (See Increased Risk of Falling in the Elderly .)
Three Methods for Reducing the Injurious Effects of Falling
No one has perfect balance. Everyone falls sometime. Falls happen and cannot be entirely eliminated. The trick is to reduce the number of falls and minimize the negative effects of any falls that do occur. Three goals must be achieved for this to be successful.
- Balance must be improved.
- Significantly reduce the loss of bone mass.
- Reduce the stress placed on bones during a fall by learning how to fall safely.
This can be done by learning the use of various martial arts techniques and exercises. The idea of using what most see as a “violent” activity to reduce injury may seem strange at first. However, controlled medical studies have shown careful study of the martial arts can help.
